TDS Acoustic Auralizations

One of the things we do regularly at TDS is create acoustic auralizations. Auralizations are audio files that our clients can listen to that help them understand the acoustic designs we create. This allows them to make decisions not only with our detailed reports, but the aural impression that the designs can provide. TDS can provide auralizations of the space without any changes or with different or varying amounts of modifications. Any location within the space can be auralized to demonstrate clarity or reverberance.

Every room has an individual acoustic signature known as its Impulse Response. The impulse response can be described as the room’s reaction to a loud and short percussive sound like a gun shot or hand clap. This measurement describes a lot of very useful information about the space including the reflection sequence and reverberation time.

A three-dimensional impulse response can be recorded using a sound field microphone or calculated using acoustic modelling software. The process of auralisation utilizes the impulse response to be applied to an an echoic (dry) sound. This has the effect of making the recorded sound appear as if it was played within this space with all the three-dimensional information being preserved and rendered.

Ambisonic auralizations offer distinct advantages over traditional stereo. They give an immersive 3Daural experience with much better source localization and sense of depth.
